On Tuesday, February 23, 2010, Fruitport Community Schools, upon approval by State Treasury, will place before voters a proposal to maintain the current three-mill tax levy which would generate approximately $8.6 million dollars toward facility upgrades. This is a zero net tax increase in millage.
Why a bond issue in February? In our last Focus, we invited community members to join our Facilities Study Committee. Its purpose has been to evaluate and prioritize the critical needs that exist throughout the district. Additionally, FCS applied for federal stimulus dollars. Currently, that money has already been appropriated to other districts. It is still possible, however, that additional stimulus dollars may become available. The current three-mill local school debt retirement millage rate is set to roll back. If Fruitport voters agree to maintain the current millage rate, approximately $8.6 million would be generated for district upgrades and renovations. Some of these upgrades include roof, boiler, window, and door replacements to improve energy efficiency, updated technology and the needed electrical wiring to support technology, school bus replacements, and various safety measures including improvements to an elementary school parking lot and building access control.
